Ascending

to Your Dreams

Ascending to Your Dreams

Recently I completed the adventure of climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania Africa. It was a great adventure. My climb was part of the Klimbing for Kids Campaign organized by Haven of Hope International. The climb was to raise awareness of the young men and women who are aging out of care in orphanages, group homes and the foster care system. Every three seconds a youth ages out of care without a high school diploma or necessary job skill to be successful.

In the days just before we started our ascent to Mount Kilimanjaro, I began to reflect on the young men and women that I was climbing to represent. These are the 14–17-year-olds who are  nearing the point of aging out.  These youth are part of 153 Million orphans world wide - The Nation of Orphans.

I reflected on how my decision to climb, preparation, planning and then execution of the climb would illustrate a model for achieving their dreams. I often hear the youth represented above share their dreams, lofty dreams. But, these dreams will require them to make a decision, develop and execute a plan; but just as important they will need the help of mentors and supporters. Ascending to Your Dreams shares my journey from the decision to climb, with insights from Alice his wife.

When your pain becomes your name

John Sweet has been directly involved in training workers and caring for hurting children for over twenty-five years. His experience working with troubled children and caregiving parents provides a unique perspective of experience and competence for leadership development, parental training and counsel.

Most recently, he has been involved in raising awareness and ministering to children who have been trafficked or are at risk of trafficking.

Sweet pastored a church in Tennessee for 20 years along with his late wife Jo Ann. He founded Smoky Mountain Children's Home Foster Family Care and directed the residential program there. John served as a consultant for Church of God World Missions Orphanages. He currently serves as the Executive Director of Heart of Florida Youth Ranch. He also currently serves with Global Chaplains Coalition training chaplains in several states and internationally as well.

In 2022, Sweet married Alice who is the founder and director of Haven of Hope International; serving seven homes in six countries.

Serving caregivers to children has been a central focus for over 25 years. These programs have shown great success and in 2011 John was recognized by United States Congress with Angels of Adoption; in multiple years he has led the programs in Tennessee and Florida to international accreditation with Council on Accreditation (COA), which is the gold standard for agencies in the field; agencies under his direction have grown exponentially in care-beds and financial status; however, no achievement can ever eclipses the thousands of children fostered and hundreds who have found forever homes through adoption.

Sweet says his life was forever changed when we opened our home to foster children and then worked to support others who were willing to do the same.
